What do ice cream vans do in the winter

What do ice cream vans do in the winter

Ellinor’s ice cream vans usually look to park up in the winter after all the firework events and School Christmas visits. Does the work finish? Well no. One of the first jobs is stripping the vans bare inside of stock ready to carry out the many maintenance jobs, did you know the ice cream machine has approx forty moving parts so some need work and some need replacing. One van each year is booked in for a complete body respray which keeps the fleet looking polished. The vans are deep cleaned and the staff are looking to a few weeks well earned rest. It isn’t long before its time to start again, the vans all get booked in for a full service and ice cream machinery servicing as well. Once again the vans are given a very deep clean and time to order new utensils and items required for the season ahead.

Now work really begins in early February where Ellinor’s visit trade shows. Taste everything and speak to all the manufacturers and suppliers. Everyone ice cream related are at the shows Walls, Nestle, Treats, Stella the list goes on. Ellinor’s find out products that are being delisted and new ones coming to the UK. Sometimes we have a good idea and sometimes there are complete surprises, who could guess Walls were going to stop the famous mint feast in 2017. Sometimes hard decisions have to be made for instance the iconic Fab lolly, it would be nice to keep this for sentimental reasons and historically the oldest continuous name lolly brand but it unfortunately is so small now the company can’t justify the retail price for their customers. After this it’s careful consideration of what our customers have said to us, what was popular last season and what was not. As one of the leading ice cream companies it’s also about what’s trending and what is around the next corner public tastes and fashions are ever evolving so keeping the menus fresh and new helps the company to lead the way. Once all things are considered its time to start designing and planning the new menu for the oncoming season, company spokesperson Bonita Ellinor said “its very exciting to introduce the new menu’s to our customers and see the reaction to new products and inventions of our own, one I really think will be a hit this year is the new white chocolate and cookies Magnum”.

The booking office are very busy already by February sending out quotes for Weddings, Corporate hire days and year on year returning customer’s that like to book early to guarantee an Ellinor’s ice cream van at their event.

Its all about cleaning again top to bottom then restocking the vans, if the weathers kind by the end of February its all out and full steam ahead for the season. Watch out for an Ellinor’s ice cream van on a street or event and see what’s new for this year there are lots of yummy surprises in store for you.

Ice Cream Grows on Trees?

Ice Cream Grows on Trees?

Ice Cream DOES grow on trees

We all scream for Ice Cream! It’s one of our great nation’s favourite desserts and we make in many ways, even at home. We shop for it, go to our local ice cream van for it, hot days, cold days, even bad days, Ice Cream is something we all reach for. Flavours range from the plain to the exotic and even the strange like Thai Green Curry (yes, it’s a real flavour) But is a freezer the only place to get it? Well, it turns out, unlike money, Ice Cream does grow on trees!

You’ll have to trek all the way to South America to find it, but deep in the Jungle you’ll find the Inga Tree, and from this tree, like natures own ice cream van you’ll find the Ice Cream Bean (Inga Edulis). They grow as Legumes and upto 2 metres long from the Inga tree. Who doesn’t want 2 metres of ice cream tasting seeds right? Like many varieties of seed they appeal to our sweet side, and once split open, inside the pod-like legume you’ll find the seeds wrapped in what can only be described as natures candy floss and guess what…it tastes like vanilla ice cream! The 60ft climb to the top may seem somewhat an effort but the locals who are lucky enough to have these trees in their back garden enjoy the bean treat. Such Countries as Ecuador, Peru and Columbia all enjoy the luxury of the Ice Cream Bean.

During the wet season the Ice Cream bean is in abundance and who can’t get enough of it…The monkeys of course! We hear it’s a favourite! But apart from their delicious beans the Inga trees are much more useful in other ways; they provide a natural fertiliser to the surrounding trees and bushes by their release of nitrogen into the soil and from their height they provide great shade in the hot sun, they are used to help shade other plantations like Coco and coffee. The Inga Tree also make fantastic timber, so your house could smell of ice cream…maybe? It’s a win win all round.

So there you have it, Ice Cream does grow on trees… kind of. The Bean, or Legume, provides ice cream flavour without the freezer!

Ice Cream The key To Happiness

Ice Cream The key To Happiness

The key to Happiness…

We’ve all seen the films. Girl and boy break up and the classic scene where she sits on the sofa, mascara like a river down her face and in her hands, a massive tub of Ben & Jerry’s. So this raises the question, does ice cream really comfort us? And more so, can it provide us with actual Happiness?

Scientist discovered that a serving of Ice Cream does in fact bring pleasure to the centre of the brain, a similar reaction to winning money – perhaps not equal to winning millions on the lottery but hey, it’s something.

The Neuroscientists at the Institute of Psychiatry lead by Professor Michael Brammer, run FMRI scans on student volunteers who were eating vanilla ice cream and the results will please everyone. They found immediate effects on the brain, or the Orbitofrontal Cortex (OFC) to be exact, which is where emotional processing and decision making comes from. The Ice Cream played a positive effect on the area; in fact it gave a positive effect to another 5 areas of the brain! All of these areas combined with the Retrosplenial Congulate lead to one simple result. The person was emotionally happy because of the ice cream!

So there you go, science says so. Science says if your sad, go see your local ice cream Van and get a delicious whippy because you will feel better right away.  Great News!
